My latest articles in Writing Magazine

March's issue of Writing Magazine carries a fried egg on toast on the 'Beginners' page.

Damned clever these editors; my article is called 'Keep it Simple'... and you don't get much simpler than an egg done sunnyside up on a bit of burnt bread.

This piece, however, is less about eating (although there's a backstory to the article which is), and more about planning... while not over-planning (or, if I may pun, over-egging).

It's easy in the white heat of creativity to throw everything at the wall (and the reader) and try to come up with the blockbuster to end all blockbusters.

But keeping it simple is the best option, because it's so easy to end with up an over-complexity of ideas, characters, details and narrative, you end up pleasing nobody - least of all yourself.

The main theme is, make the reading easy by making the writing easy. And don't reveal everything on the first page.

Save something for dessert.

This month's New Author Profile meets journalist and debut author Janet Kelly.

Her first novel 'Dear Beneficiary' is about to be published by Cutting Edge Press. Janet freely admits that her background and discipline in journalism certainly helped her with the task of writing her book. But it didn't mean she waltzed home with a book deal at the first try.

Oh, if only it were that easy!
